Benefits of Training with a Soccer Goal Net.

Having a soccer goal net of any size saves time from chasing soccer balls, because without soccer goal nets a goal would just be a rectangular frame with a goalie standing inside it, and nothing else. Balls would fly through and nothing would stop the ball. Additionally soccer goal nets provide excellent target shooting practice, and shooting drills can be practiced from any distance, So if you want to perfect your precision shooting skills as well as enhance your power shooting skill,s a soccer goal net is a must.

You will also need a soccer goal, which is made of metal and a net. The crossbar which holds the net is attached to two posts which are 8 yards apart.

Before purchasing your soccer goal net you need to know where your soccer nets are going to be placed, and how it will be used. Maybe you are planning to construct a goal in your backyard for practice now and then. Or perhaps you are in charge of a soccer field for competitive games. The type of usage your net will be experiencing will determine the type of soccer net you need.

If you have a backyard soccer area you can find soccer goal nets on the cheaper side since the amount of force exerted on the soccer net would not be the same as for school games. The majority of soccer goal nets are made with twisted polyethylene material, which is very durable. Some are 2mm, some are 4mm. For younger kids you would use 2mm, however it is not as strong as 4mm and might be apt to break more easily with older children.

For school and league soccer you want to make sure that not only do you have a stronger 4mm soccer, you should also be sure you have back up nets. Through eventual wear and tear the soccer net can become damaged or pulled. For this reason you should be prepared with a replacement soccer net.

Most soccer nets are made from polyethylene plastic or nylon cording. The diameter of the separate strands can range from 2mm to 5mm in diameter. This is the cord thickness. The holes, or openings in the mesh can range from 2.5 inches to 5 inches. The standard designs are either a honeycomb, (like the cereal), or square pattern.

Soccer Goal Net Sizing

Because there are different sizes of soccer goals made for practice, pick-up, mini games, or full field games, there are different sizes of soccer nets. To be sure that you get the correct size use the following guidelines:

  • Width - distance between the 2 posts.
  • Height - distance between the ground and the crossbar.
  • Top Depth - Distance from front crossbar to top corner of the frame.
  • Bottom Depth - distance from goal post to back crossbar on the ground.

Having accurate measurements will help you choose the correct soccer net. If you are unsure, always buy larger as you can double up the mesh if necessary.

What to Choose

A larger soccer goal net made with a thicker cord is more expensive, but will last longer. Durability of the soccer goal net is an important factor. A net will receive a lot of balls during a practice or during games. Each time a ball hits the net it will affect the mesh. And every game or practice is going to see some bodies getting tangled up in that mesh.

Putting up The Net

Attachments

Most goals come equipped with clips or bars to attach the net onto the frame.

For existing goals, clips can be bought separately and you can install them yourself.

Velcro-type strips are also available to wrap around the poles to fasten the net. But these will probably need to be replaced often.

You can use twine or rope but it is really a pain to cut and replace on a regular basis.

Some people suggest using bungee cords. I say NO! The hooks can be very dangerous if someone runs into them. I do not feel that they are safe enough.

Anchors

Many goals come with anchors or stakes to secure the mesh to the ground.

You should have an anchor system in place on all soccer goals.

Safety Tips for Soccer Goals and Nets

  • Securely anchor or counterweight movable soccer goals at ALL times. Anchor or chain your soccer goal and net to nearby fence posts, dugouts, or any other similar sturdy fixture when not in use. If this is not practical, store movable soccer goals and nets in a place where children cannot have access to them.
  • Remove soccer nets when goals are not in use. Check for structural integrity and proper connecting hardware before every use.
  • Replace damaged or missing parts or fasteners immediately.
  • NEVER allow anyone to climb on the net or goal framework.
  • Ensure safety/warning labels are clearly visible (placed under the crossbar and on the sides of the down-posts at eye level).
  • Fully disassemble goals for seasonal storage.
